Kalangala Island is a retreat island that is located within Lake Victoria and is the largest among the 84 islands northwest of the lake. It is also known to have fertile soils and travelers during their safaris can see several palm oil trees covering the island.

On this island, the main economic activity is fishing since the area is mostly covered by water though other activities like agriculture, livestock rearing,and many others are done also.

How to get to Kalangala island?

When planning to get to Kalangala Island, travelers are supposed to either use water transport or air transport to get off the mainland to the island. While using water transport, travelers are transported by road to the Nakiwogo land site where travelers take a ferry to the island.

It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the island while using a ferry. Travelers can tend to hire private boats that cruise them in time to the island and it takes about 3 hours.

The other route that travelers can use is the ferry in Bukakata which is after diverting off the Kampala Masaka highway. While using this ferry, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the island.

The other means of transport is air transport which takes about 1 to 2 hours to reach the island whereas in this mode of transport, travelers have an aerial view of Lake Victoria.

Kalangala Island is open for travelers throughout the year. The best time to visit the island is during the dry season June to September and December to February where the area is more dry and clear to support any activity.

During this time fewer waves on the lake may hinder the safari.
