Mountain gorillas live in forests high in the mountains. They have thicker fur compared to other great apes which helps them to survive in a habitat where temperatures often drop below freezing point. They live in groups called families of 10 to 40 individuals. These are trekked in the mornings as they are active and visitors spend an hour in their presence. Gorillas spend half of their day feeding on a vegetation diet mainly roots, leaves, fruits, etc.
Chimpanzee trekking is a much sought-after activity after the gorilla trekking. Chimpanzees can be found in different places Kibale National Park, Kalinzu Forest Reserve, Kyambura Gorge, and Bugongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park. The best time to trek chimpanzees is October to January because it’s easier to access chimpanzees when the grass is short and fruits are ripening usually done in the morning or evening with the help of a game ranger.
